When I was a small child I can remember being fascinated
by all types of animals. I was always intrigued by the methods they
displayed for survival and their ability to adapt to changes in their
environment. We moved several times due to my fathers work and I wasn't
allowed to have a dog or a cat - so I kept frogs, toads, snakes,
lizards, turtles and several types of small rodents as pets. I always
dreamed of becoming a veterinarian but my fascination with animals and
science led me down a different career path at first. I graduated from
an undergraduate college (in New York) with a BS in Chemistry and then
pursued a PhD in Biochemistry from Purdue University.
At Purdue I met my future wife while I was
a teaching assistant - she then went to Kansas State University for her
D.V.M. degree while I finished my graduate studies at Purdue. We moved
to Michigan where she practiced at a local veterinary clinic for
several years while I was a Research Fellow at the University of
Michigan Medical School. After leaving the University of Michigan I
worked at Michigan State University in the Veterinary College doing
vaccine research for a swine respiratory pathogen. While at Michigan
State I thought about going back to school to become a veterinarian and
after some prodding from my spouse I did. After graduating I worked as
a full time veterinarian at the East Detroit Animal Hospital and then a
full time emergency veterinarian. During my years at the East Detroit
Animal Hospital I served on the State Veterinary Board, I worked
part time as a relief veterinarian for many of the local emergency
veterinary clinics and even worked for the Detroit Zoo when the head
vet [Dr Ann Duncan] was on maternity leave. I enjoyed the emergency vet
work, but it does take a toll on your family - you end up working most
- if not all holidays. I have now been a full time relief veterinarian
since Jan 2006 and am at the Morris Animal Hospital every other Friday.
My interests include small animal and exotic pet veterinary medicine,
emergency medicine, and surgery.
My wife and I have two wonderful children, several dogs
and a few other critters in the house. I feel so fortunate that I have
such a great family and a job I enjoy so much. Now if only the house we
are remodeling would ever be finished......
